Kindergarten Jitters

August 9, 2018
Barrett starts Kindergarten in one week. One week until our world changes forever. I know this sounds dramatic, but I changed my entire life to stay home with him and this will be the first time ever he is away from me five days a week. I will never forget the advice I was given in my master's program by the women who were on the verge of retirement. I asked them what they would do differently if they could, and they said they would go back in time and stay home with their babies the first five years. There is always time for work, but babies don't keep.  Those years were extremely hard and I'm thankful those types of hardships are in the past, but my heart sinks knowing those long, hard, amazing days are over.

Tonight before bed, he had that look on his face. The look only a mom notices. He said he wanted to talk about school. He asked me many questions wanting to know even the smallest details about his new journey. One question was if the playground would have grass or wood chips. His attention to detail never ceases to amaze me. After talking for a while, he said he had one more thing to say. He said he was a little nervous, and hesitated before telling me that he was scared he would be made fun of by other kids that may not like the same things he likes. He is in a Pokemon phase and has been all Summer. He picks up on the fact that other kids don't obsess over things like he does, and when he asks questions he usually gets the answer "I don't know". He is worried someone will make fun of him for liking Pokemon, but he also said that he might be able to find someone that likes Star Wars. Then he got a big smile and said he might could even find a girl who likes Star Wars. Barrett beats to his own drum, and one thing I wish for him as he starts this new chapter is that he continues to be himself and finds friends who accept him for who he is.

When we moved into our new house, this is what Barrett requested for his wall decor. I finally got him a letter board so he could have his wish and he asked me to add the number 34. He said he was only 34 famous right now and hopes to be 100 famous someday.

We had a lesson on Albert Einstein tonight after his hair turned into this after his bath.

He spent quite a bit of time being creative on his letter board. One lego figure was $2.99 while the other had varying amounts of keys from subway surfer.

Barrett is FIVE!

Our baby boy is five-years-old and no longer a baby at all! Five has been an age I've been nervous about for a while. It symbolizes a new place for him as a kid, no longer a "toddler"; a new place for us as parents, praying and working hard to do everything we can with the time at home we have to help him become a happy and kind person, to make a positive influence and change in this world. There isn't much that's easy when it comes to parenting our Barrett. We struggle daily with his behavior and mood, and I end up in tears a lot. As difficult as it is I surprisingly wouldn't change him at all. He's challenging for sure, but loving him is the easiest thing I've ever done. Since the day he was born my love was instant and strong, much like his personality. I feel like I've known him for a thousand years, and we both completely get each other. His quirkiness fits right in with our little family and we truly feel lucky to have this detail obsessed, overly passionate, and over the top social little human as our son.

Barrett as a brand new five year old:
Barrett is usually up and awake before anyone else in the house. He comes straight into our room to wake us up and he is non-stop the entire day until bedtime. Since starting pre-k, we've actually had to wake him up a few times and he's usually pretty good about getting up. I lay out his outfit the night before and he will dress himself once we get him up. He will grab a hat or some kind of toy for the car ride and he always eats something on the way. He's only been upset one time when I dropped him off at school, but I think he was tired and he got over it quickly. He loves his new class and talks about every detail of the day when he gets home. I know every person he talks to or that talks to him, and he will tell me what each person says and what they look like. A few weeks after his first day of the Summer program I asked him what his good friend Olive looked like after he described a few of his other friends that were boys. He said to me with no hesitation "She has brown hair, light skin, brown eyes, a gray shirt (I already forgot what he told me was on it), pink pants, purple shoes, and a peppa pig watch."He was very precise with all of the details, so I asked if that was what she was wearing that day. He said "No, that's what she was wearing the first day of school, when I met her!" This was three weeks before and he had seen her multiple times since that day. This boy's memory continues to amaze me every single day!

His favorite foods are still pretty much the same. His favorite vegetable is still cucumbers. He still loves blueberries and avocados, but will request watermelon, cantaloupe, and pineapple if I ask him to pick something at the store. He would eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every single day if he could. His school is peanut-free, so we do almond butter and jelly sandwiches for his school lunches and he loves it. For snacking, he loves his Chobani yogurts, scoops of almond butter, Larabar granola bars, pickles, popcorn, and marshmallows. We don't drink cow milk at all anymore which has been a very gradual change I've wanted for a few years now. I never thought it was possible, but we don't miss it at all! Barrett even asks for a glass of chocolate cashew milk or almond milk now. Overall, he's still a great eater and I'm grateful that he has one thing that is easy throughout the day.

Dancing and music are still big for Barrett. We have dance parties quite often and watching him dance and sing are some of my favorite moments with him. When he catches me staring he will make this face like he's embarrassed, but I can tell he actually likes it. He's very good at acting and pretending. He has a whole list of imaginary friends and will argue until he's blue in the face that they aren't pretend, but in fact, real people. Jason is my least favorite of his "friends" because he is apparently the one to blame for any and every bad behavior Barrett has. Jason obviously gets brought up the most. His other imaginary friends are Illian (female), Roywrer (female), Snowcone (female), Chase (male), and Gap (male). Four-year-old Barrett talked about these friends all the time, but their existence is slowly fading. His new thing is actually turning himself into different people. "Awesome" is his alter ego and he shows up at least once a week. He will go into full character and even go as far as saying that he heard that Barrett had a marshmallow earlier in the day, so he would like to try one now as "Awesome". His voice is a little different and even his mannerisms. He slipped up too many times the first time he was Awesome by calling me Mommy, so he said that even though I wasn't his Mommy, that is just what he wants to call me while he is at our house. Usually when Awesome is present it's because Barrett is away at basketball practice.

This is just a tiny part of Barrett, so you can imagine the depth of entertainment around our house these days, and this is just on top of our sassy little 18 month old Zoey. I fully understand the meaning of "The days are long, but the years are short". We are trying so hard to soak up these years of our babies still being babies, because we are certainly not ready for the days of pretending and family dance parties to fade away.

To our Barrett, Binka, Bear, Bubby, and Bubba...we hope you dance!

First Day of Pre-K

Barrett had his first day of pre-k last week, on the day before his fifth birthday! We started him in the Summer program two days a week at the same school with the same teacher to get him acclimated to the change and his first week was great! I cried like a baby the night before because of all the changes we are going through right now. He started pre-k on his last day of being a four-year-old, and I started a new job and my first job away from our home all in the same week. So many changes are happening but they are all positive and we are all pretty happy going into the second week of our new schedules. Little miss Zoey is going with the flow per usual and she nods her head and smiles when I ask if she's ready to go stay with her Na Na while Mommy works.

The hardest part of all of this was the moment Barrett asked me about my job. After his first day, he asked me what my new job was called. I tried to fully explain it because he likes to know every detail of everything. We talked about Daddy's job for a while then after a moment of silence, he looked me right in the eyes and said "But Mommy, your job is being MY Mommy!" Cue the tears! Ugh that moment was so so difficult for my heart, but it's been a wonderful change for us all and I'm still home when he's home for the most part :) Now here are the pictures from his first day that I could stare at for hours. I love this boy more than words can describe!

Barrett is FOUR!

The day he turned four, Barrett woke us up early as always and got in our bed while we sang happy birthday. He loved it and was super excited that we had a present ready for him to unwrap. He got to open a Spiderman comic book with two little characters. We laid in bed as long as we could then once Steven had to get up for work, we started getting ready for a fun day. My mom was originally going to keep Zoey so Barrett and I could have a day with just us, but she wanted to come with us. We loaded up two toddlers and a baby and had a long, crazy, fun day at the mall.

I asked Barrett what he wanted to do for his birthday and he wanted to go to the mall to ride the carousel, so that's what we did. He spotted a playground in the mall so we let the boys play and it was definitely their favorite part of the day. We rode the carousel, caught pokemon, ate chick fila, tried on superhero jackets at the Disney store, ate cookies, built Captain America bears, and rode around in their firetruck double stroller. Mom and I were both exhausted and were actually sore the next day lol!

We ended the trip with this little fit, but he got over it. There is never a dull moment with this child...or a quiet moment :)

Well Visit for Z and Asthma Check-Up for B

We had Zoey's well visit a few weeks ago and she is healthy and much bigger than her big brother was at this age! She's in the 55th percentile for weight and 77th for height! I think quite a bit of that weight may be in those cheeks of hers. We split up her vaccines this time around since she reacted so badly to her four month shots, so she only had one shot in the leg and an oral vaccine. She barely cried and had no fever or fussiness this time. She did not like her pediatrician examining her at all, but once I picked her up she was fine. It's so funny how laid back we are with her cries because Barrett's cries were at least five times more intense. I guess all second, third, fourth, etc children get the short end of the stick when it comes to getting full attention, but poor Z has it worse with her extra loud and dramatic big bro. I have a feeling she will step it up in the noise department and hold her own before too long. Our beautiful, sweet girl :)

This appointment was also about figuring out Barrett's asthma situation. We had another scare in Hawaii and I've reluctantly held him back from three-year-old boy activities since then. I'm so scared of him having a surprise asthma attack and not being able to help him, so we had to talk to the doctor. He put him on a preventative breathing treatment that we will do morning and night, but it's only two pumps so hopefully it won't be too bad. We will also start play therapy soon so I am anxious and excited for positive changes for our special, smart, strong-willed boy.

The love each other

Both kids were happy so we headed downtown to Barley & Board. Really good food and it's also a Poke stop :)

Almost Four

Today is Barrett's last day to be three and I think we both have mixed emotions. I'm more than ready to say goodbye to his way too often "threenager" moments, but he's also still cuddling, begging for us to lay down with him every night after reading books, and gives us kisses and hugs all the time. Today, I told Barrett he would be four when he woke up. His face lit up then quickly changed to a look of worry. He said "Mommy, I don't want to be big forever. I want to stay little." Then ten minutes later he said "I want to hug boobies...Harley Quinn boobies" Oh how I miss his innocent little one-year-old self when he talks about superheroes (constantly) and boobies. What are we going to do with him??

We made today a celebration with a homemade cinnamon swirl cake with added chocolate chips per Barrett's request. Then for Zoey's long nap, we laid in bed while he watched cartoons and I got an hour of much needed rest. Pops was in town so he stopped by to bring us more fresh eggs. He fed and hung out with Zoey while B and I ran to Target so I could get some cheesy Spiderman wrapping paper to get a present ready for tomorrow. Steven got off work at 4:00 and had the best idea to go to one of our local favorites, Angelina's, for Mexican food. Pops came with us so of course, B was excited. He also got to open a little early birthday Pokemon present :)

Barrett's night time routines are always pretty long, and when Steven is home at night (about half the week) he usually is in charge of B for his routine. Tonight, I spent way too long playing, reading, laughing, and telling stories with my Barrett. He picked out all Halloween themed books and requested two stories for me to make up afterwards. He will tell me what characters and which real people to include and the rest is up to me. Tonight, he wanted Logan in both stories and red Hulk, green Hulk, and three different colored Captain America's. He is SO SO excited about his party coming up next weekend. He will ask me what all we are going to do and who all is going to be there. He names everyone he loves and it's really so sweet how much he loves everyone who he doesn't even get to see very much. He absolutely loves being surrounded by people!

In true three-year-old Barrett fashion, we ended the night with him throwing a LOUD, DRAMATIC fit because he couldn't find his lego superhero book. This was after he already got up and made us search for a comic book. Any mommas out there with an extremely dramatic, strong-willed child knows the struggle, so we opened a bottle of wine and proceeded to make birthday pancakes to reheat for the morning. Cheers to saying goodbye to my "threenager" and praying hard he doesn't turn into a "fournado"!

Barrett is three and a half!

Our sweet baby boy is three and a half! Transitioning from baby to boy is happening fast, and I am not ready for it at all. I love three-year-old Barrett's innocence; he is constantly in a world of pretend, and I could watch him play for hours. He is a different character every day, and makes everyone he comes across call him by his pretend name. His usual characters are Captain America, Hulk, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Finn, and Iron Man. He will pretend to put on the whole costume, and makes the sound effects for putting on and taking off each piece. He will pretend the other characters are in the room and play out a whole scene. He has full conversations with his pretend friends and will sometimes have us make them a plate of pretend food to eat with him. One of the cutest things he's done lately is pretend his girlfriend was sitting by him at the kitchen island.
He has given me pretend presents and is very serious about where I put them.

Light saber fights, singing and dancing to the music channel on the tv, and playing with his pretend and real Avengers and Star Wars characters are daily activities while we are at home. He is still very into music; he picks up on things musically that most people don't, and he has told me he wants to sing on the radio and tv when he grows up. He can hear specific instruments in the background of songs that we never taught him, and will always surprise us with how quickly he learns lyrics. Two of his favorite movies are Star Wars and Avengers. Sometimes, he will watch/listen to the beginning music for 30 minutes before asking us to start the movie because he loves the music so much. He is constantly trying to be the center of attention, and I think his favorite thing in the world is making us laugh.

Barrett is loud, curious, dramatic, strong-willed, smart beyond his years, and extremely sweet! He's the best big brother to Zoey. He constantly wants to touch, hug, and kiss her. He has nicknamed her Zingo Zoey and tells us she is "my baby Zoey". This precious boy truly has my heart!

Jett's birthday party. Out first time to go somewhere with just us two since Zoey was born. The morning of his party, I told Barrett we were going. He immediately asked if Zoey was going and when I told him it was just going to be Mommy and Barrett, he jumped up and down screaming "YAY!!!" It simultaneously broke and melted my heart. Aunt Ash Ash babysat Zoey and we thoroughly enjoyed our time together with just us two.

This was the first night I had both babies by myself when Steven had to work until 9:00. Zoey was happy in her rock-n-play during his bath, reading books, and nighttime snuggles.

The day he turned three-and-a-half. We watched the 60th anniversary Disney special together while Zoey napped. He sat in my lap the whole time and wanted his Mickey. This was a rare thing and I loved every second!

Almost every night after we put him to bed, he ends up back in our room just to tell us he loves us, to get water, or just to give us a hug. This night, he wanted a hug and I couldn't help letting him snuggle with us for a little while before going back to his room.

He loves when I go in his playroom and actually play with his characters with him. Zoey came with us this time and Barrett loved it.

Barrett picks his skeleton pajamas every chance he gets.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup...a new favorite!
