First Trip to the ER

On Sunday, we had to take Barrett to the Emergency Room for the first time...and hopefully the last! Saturday evening he had a mild fever before going to bed. He had been slobbering more and couldn't keep his fingers off of his gums so I attributed the low grade fever to teething. Sunday morning he was still feverish, but I wasn't worried until around 9:30 when he hadn't played all morning and just wanted to be held. I called our pediatrician to talk to an on call nurse and she said if his temperature got to 105 to take him to the ER. Steven had to be at work at 10 so it was just me and Bear all day. He laid in my lap the whole day and I was a worried mess. He never sleeps anywhere other than his crib and he was soundly sleeping cuddled up in my lap. I had given him tylenol a couple of times and his fever stayed around 102. At around 3:00, I woke him up to take his temperature because he felt so hot. When 104.5 showed up on the thermometer I was shaking and had tears in my eyes. We have never even had to take him to the doctor for being sick so I was freaking out at such a high temperature coupled with him being so lethargic. I called my mom and she came over and we took him to the ER. After four hours of tests and waiting they sent us home with the diagnosis of a virus.

We had to keep giving him tylenol and motrin and call our pediatrician Monday morning. I was relieved they didn't find anything, but also frustrated that I couldn't do anything for my baby. I woke up every hour Sunday night to check on him. It broke my heart watching him sleep in only his diaper knowing he didn't feel good. Barrett's pediatrician told us it is very common for babies to come down with Summer viruses that cause fever with no other symptoms. He also said it could be Roseola and to not be alarmed if a rash showed up on his tummy after his fever breaks. Sure enough, Tuesday night, he broke out in a rash on his tummy but acted completely normal. I looked up Roseola and he definitely had this virus. He is all better now and I will never again feel overly paranoid for putting a cover on high chairs and shopping carts! (I remember him putting his mouth on the shopping cart at Hobby Lobby last week when we went in for a quick trip and didn't grab the cover...it makes me sick thinking he could have gotten a virus from that) Seeing my baby like that was the absolute worst experience.

Rash from Roseola

Feeling  much better the next evening

So relieved to see this happy face!

  1. How scary! I'm so glad he is okay!! I hate that feeling of not being able to do anything to help your baby feel better!
