PaPa

Our sweet PaPa passed away Friday night. This has been a very difficult time, but he is no longer in pain and we now have an angel watching over us. I love him so much and will cherish all of the wonderful memories. Here is the letter we put together for PaPa that Jaime read at the funeral.

Memories from your daughters and grandkids

We always knew that you loved us. You taught us the valuable lesson of working hard to provide for our families.  Growing up you always made sure we had everything we needed. We remember one Christmas when times were tough, but we still had presents under the tree. We have so many wonderful memories to share of our sweet daddy. Thank you Daddy and Momma for letting us own horses when we were growing up. We had so much fun at all of the horse shows. You seemed very proud when we brought home the trophies.  You were always thinking about your girls at home.  You gave us one of our favorite dogs Soby or as Shirley called him, Sobuster. While working at C&H transport you found him in the yard and brought him home to protect your girls. We had so many fun trips on your boat at Lake Texoma. You loved to anchor under the bridge for the best fishing. We remember the road trips to California, Washington, Montana, Colorado, Disneyland, and Laguna Beach. We all got a laugh when you struggled to keep your swim trunks from falling off in the surf.

We loved hearing some of your stories about the army. You were stationed in Germany right after the end of the war. During one drive you came across a German who begged for old coffee grounds. You reported this to the officer in charge of the mess hall and the officer gave you a new bag of coffee instead. You gladly gave him the new bag and he was so thankful. This was just one example of your kind heart.  You were in the same barracks as Porter Waggoner before he was a star. You gave him your own guitar since you didn’t know how to play! We always enjoyed hearing that story.
We remember how much you loved your cows. All of them had a name and they were more like pets to you. You hardly went anywhere without your cowboy hat and boots. You loved watching western shows.  John Wayne and the Rifleman were some of your favorites, but without fail you and Mother would sit together and watch Wheel of Fortune every night.

We know you really loved Mother.  We remember when she had a car wreck when we were young. When you heard about the wreck you dropped to your knees. You always wanted to keep Momma close to you, especially in the past few years. When she worked by herself at the store you would often go there and sit until closing to be with her. Daddy, know that your daughters and grandkids will make sure she is looked after very well.

Everyone could tell that you loved your grandkids! When we were young, you would let us name a calf and tell us it was our own. You would bring us to the sale barn and tell Milton that it was our calf being sold and to make sure it brought good money. You told us to sit on our hands so we would not accidentally bid. You were always so proud to introduce us.  You would say “This is my granddaughter or grandson” with such a smile. You were so proud as each of your grandchildren got married, and your eyes would light up with pride when you saw you great-grandkids. You were very excited about the upcoming arrival of baby Barrett.

You always made an effort to make each of us feel special.  You would get down on the living room floor and color with us. You would take us to the barn and show us how to feed the baby calves with bottles.  Many of us had our first driving experiences with you in your pickup while feeding the cows. You always wanted us to shake your hand…this was very important to you. You taught us and many young kids at church how to give a firm handshake. Just this past week you shook hands with Collin and Remi.
You had such a huge heart and took joy in giving special gifts to the children in your life. We remember how important it was for you to find the perfect cowboy hats for the two young boys at church.
You loved sticking out your tongue at the grandkids and great-grandkids! You also got a laugh at church by holding on to your attendance cards so that the young men who pick up cards would have to tug it loose out of your hands. You loved sharing a laugh with everyone.

Church was the most important thing to you. You always wanted your family with you at church, and you never wanted to miss a service. Not too long ago you told Gran what a good sermon David gave and said at least the parts that you could hear were great.  After church you wanted the whole family to eat lunch together.  When we ate at a restaurant, you would insist on paying for everyone’s food.

We have been blessed to have had you as our Daddy and our PaPa, a strong rock in our family with the most gentle and caring soul. You will be in our hearts forever. We love you and will see you again someday in heaven.
